Installing dtSearch
After unzipping the file:

Installing in Windows 95/98:
Click Start, go to Run, open c:\temp\setup.exe (where C is your hard
drive and temp is the name of the directory where the dtSearch zipped
file is stored) and click OK. The install program will then guide you
through the rest of the installation.

Thank you for your interest in dtSearch text retrieval
software! This evaluation copy is fully-functional and
32-bit to run under Windows 95/98/NT. (A 16-bit Windows 3.1
version is available for purchase.)

dtSearch instantly searches hundreds of megabytes of text on
your PC or network using a wide variety of text search
options. To turn papers into dtSearchable word processor or
HTML files, dtSearch is also available bundled with Xerox's
TextBridge Pro96 OCR software.

NOTE: If you download, please un-ZIP to a temporary
directory and install to a *different* directory.

What You Can Do With dtSearch

* Instantly search hundreds of megabytes of word processor,
database (32-bit version, through ODBC), HTML, ZIP, OLE 2
files and more on your PC or network. Great with downloaded
text or source code. Capacity is unlimited. Indexed search
time is usually less than a second.

* Fine-tune your search request with search options like
proximity, and/or/not, wildcard, stemming, phonic, field and
numeric range. (A scrolling word list shows how often a
word occurs in your documents.)

* Adjust search fuzziness from 1 to 10 for "mixpelllinqs."

* Enter a "plain English" natural language search
request--get me Sam's memo on the 1994 takeover of
CorpX--and go straight to the most relevant file.

* Browse through retrieved files, jumping from one
highlighted hit to the next, searching a retrieved file for
new text, or looking at a search report showing all hits
(along with as much context as you want) with hypertext
links to the hits in your files.

* Click the Image button to have dtSearch's built-in
graphics viewer display a graphics image associated with a
document.

* View HTML files with "live" hypertext links.

* Click launch to pull up an HTML files in your Web browser.

* Cut, paste, print, copy, delete or launch.

* Use dtSearch as an add-on to Norton Navigator. (Please
see the back of your Norton Navigator manual for additional
details.)

* Use dtSearch with Xerox TextBridge Pro96 to instantly
search your file cabinet. (Please see below.)

                     How dtSearch Works

dtSearch searches through hundreds of megabytes of text in a
second by building an index that stores the location of
words in your files. Indexing is easy--just check off
directories to index. No need to tell dtSearch whether your
files are Word, WordPerfect, ZIPPED, etc.

Indexing speed for word processing files on a top PC can
exceed a dozen megabytes per minute. (Updating indexes is
easy, so your search will always find the most current
files.) Since you may sometimes want to search files that
dtSearch has not indexed, dtSearch also does unindexed as
well as "combination" searches.

dtSearch works on all major networks and provides concurrent
indexing and searching for convenient network use. Advanced
features include an extensive batch script language
(dtSearch can even create a batch script for you!), DDE-API
and alphabet customization. Advanced users can also create
HTML-linked databases. dtSearch Text Retrieval Engine and
Electronic Publisher's Toolkit sold separately.

New features in version 5.1 include:

* New Update Index dialog box with support for indexing UNC paths.
* New Index Library Manager for working with multiple index libraries.
* Support for indexing Eudora message stores.
* New File Segmentation Rules dialog box lets you tell dtSearch
to treat long text files as multiple logical subdocuments based
on document separators in the text.
* Dynamic hypertext linking lets you double-click a marked block
of words in a retrieved document to automatically search for
  other documents containing those words.
* Three optional new columns in search results: file size, index
  retrieved from, and file type.
* Merge indexes dialog box lets you combine one or more indexes
  into a single index.
* An option to change the font used in dialog boxes.

dtSearch 5.1 is a free upgrade from version 5.0 for licensed users
of dtSearch 5.1.

Please see "What's New" in the online help for more information.

You may notice a new "dtSearch Web Setup" menu option in the File
menu. This feature requires dtSearch Web, which is sold separately
from dtSearch. For more information, please contact DT Software, Inc.

Adobe Acrobat Support
=====================

Adobe Acrobat support is installed only if you already have either
Adobe Reader 3.x or Adobe Acrobat 3.x. If you install one of these
programs after installing dtSearch, reinstall dtSearch to add Acrobat
support to dtSearch.

Thesaurus
=========

If you downloaded dtSearch from the internet, the thesaurus is not
included with the dtSearch installation package. Because of its large
size (6 MB compressed; 20 MB uncompressed), we have made the thesaurus
a separate download file. To install the thesaurus, please download
wordnet.z from the downloads area of www.dtsearch.com or from
ftp.dtsearch.com/pub. After downloading, make sure your internet
software has not renamed wordnet.z to something else (AOL may rename
it to wordnet.tgz, and Internet Explorer may rename it to wordnet(1).z).
Then copy wordnet.z to the directory containing the dtSearch setup.exe
you downloaded and run setup.exe to install.

The thesaurus is exactly the same in version 5.1 as it was in version 5.0,
so if you already have the thesaurus in version 5.0 there is no need
to download it again if you are upgrading to version 5.1.

Upgrade Information
===================

Installation
------------

If you install dtSearch 5.1 over an existing dtSearch 4.x or
dtSearch 5.0 installation, dtSearch will automatically recognize
your existing indexes and option settings. If you install in a
different directory, you can use Recognize Index in the Index menu
to have dtSearch 5.1 recognize your existing indexes.

Indexes
-------

dtSearch 5.x can use indexes created with dtSearch 4.x, but dtSearch 4.x
cannot read indexes created by dtSearch 5.x. Because of minor changes
in word parsing between dtSearch 4.x and dtSearch 5.x, we recommend that
you rebuild your indexes with dtSearch 5.x anyway.

16-Bit Version
--------------

dtSearch 5.1 is 32-bit only. dtSearch 4.x is available in both 16-bit
and 32-bit versions.
