README for BEATNIK PLUG-IN Version 1.1.5

PLUG-IN PAGE REFERENCE:

THE PROGRAM:
The Beatnik Plug-in is a driver which manages the playback of RMF and other audio files within Web browsers. The greatest strengths of the Beatnik Plug-in are its high fidelity and its potential for interactivity. The sound quality is comparable to high-end PC wavetable sound cards even though the processing is entirely
software-based. The potential for interactivity results from Beatnik's support of a comprehensive set of JavaScript functions, which allow for a richer and more personalized musical experience than other multimedia delivery solutions. Beatnik allows a Web page to play music not only on opening, but also on an event such as a "mouse click" or "mouse over." These events can also trigger individual notes, sampled voices, or sound effects; start or stop music; and change tempo, volume, pitch, or mix. This is revolutionary in that it allows and even encourages direct musical interactions with Web pages, instead of the current use of the Internet as a playback-only system.

VERSION 1.1.5 UPDATES:
Bug Fixes:
A crash bug with AIFF files has been fixed.
Unsupported subtypes of WAV and AIFF files no
longer crash the plug-in, but just do not play.
The plug-in no longer crashes when trying to play
more than one MOD file at the same time. Only one
MOD file can play at a time and an attempt to play
another MOD file while one is still playing will fail -
the new file will not play.
The behavior of the plug-in's pop-up menu on the
Mac now matches the Windows plug-in's pop-up
menu behavior. You can now click-and-hold on the
plug-in control panel to bring up the menu.
An issue with MIME types being ignored in
preference to file extension has been fixed. For
example, certain Apple servers do not need file
extensions in order to send the correct MIME type.
Files that are sent across the Net without file extension
but the correct MIME type will play as expected.
Music files that are attached to e-mails in Navigator
also suffered from this problem as the internal mail
URL of the attachment didn't retain the file extension
of the attached file. Also, the ".mid", ".midi", ".aif",
".aiff" extensions are all supported properly - there
          was some problem with this.

Limited support for other browsers:
The Beatnik Plug-in now has limited playback support on
Microsoft Internet Explorer (RMF and MOD files) and has
full file playback support on Netscape Navigator 2.0 (all
     supported file types).
Compression for WAV and AIFF files
ADPCM IMA 4:1 compression is now supported for all
WAV and AIFF file subtypes that are supported by the
     plug-in.

Looping improved:
The LOOP attribute is more fully supported. Looping is now
supported for MIDI, RMF, WAV, AU, and AIFF files, but
MOD files still cannot loop. Also, all looping files also
support the finite loop count behavior where you can tell a
file to loop a specified number of times and then stop.

Improved timeout behavior:
The timeout for the plug-in has now been extended from 90
days to 120 days from initial install date.

Windows installer improved:
The new plug-in installer for Windows allows you to choose
which browser you wish to install to and installs more
effectively into Microsoft Internet Explorer and Navigator
     2.0.
