DejaViews USENET Search Client version 1.00
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This file contains some basic information about DejaViews, the news search
client which makes complex searches in USENET archives as easy as receiving
your daily email. It uses DejaNews search engine to retrieve news articles,
automatically extracts relevant data and stores the articles locally for
offline reading, cleaning and reordering.
DejaViews completely replaces DejaNews Web interface and provides the only
way to easily retrieve *a lot* of articles matching your queries and then
study them off-line.
More complete information about DejaViews and my other projects can be found
at http://www.betterbrowser.com.
CONTACTS:
With any questions, suggestions and bug reports feel free to contact me
by email:  <alexei@mail.href.com>.  Please read DejaViews section of my Web
site if you think you've found a bug:  the fix might be already there.
REQUIREMENTS:
DejaViews runs on any PC with MS Windows '95, '98 or NT 4.0 installed.
Of course, you will also need Internet access. A Web browser (MSIE or NetScape)
and an email client (MS Outlook Express works best with DejaViews) are
recommended, but not required.
Generally, if your computer is fast enough and has enough memory to run those,
it is also good enough for DejaViews.
INSTALLATION:
There is no automatic installation in this version. Put DejaViews files into
a new directory. The only file required for work is DejaViews.exe itself.
Place a shortcut to DejaViews.exe on your desktop and/or add it to the startup
menu.
Run DejaViews once to establish its association with.DJV files (DejaViews
article collections). When the program is launched for the first time,
it also generates and memorizes its unique "serial number" (a GUID, actually).
This serial number will be important later during the registration process.
DOCUMENTATION:
Sorry, neither help file nor manual are available yet. I hope that most GUI
elements of the program should be self-explaining, but if they aren't, there
are some explanations on the Web site.
REGISTRATION:
DejaViews is a "bannerware" program: an unregistered copy fetches and displays
banners in the bottom panel each time you make a search request or download an
articles. If you feel this is annoying or the banners eat up too much of
the bandwidth or your screen space, you are welcome to pay a small amount
to register DejaViews.The registration procedure is described in details on
the Web site.
Otherwise... well, at least you will generate some "impressions" and
"click throughs" for my Web site... I think that's fair!
DISCLAIMER:
Although this software has been thoroughtly tested and seems
to be safe and reliable, it is supplied "as is", without explicit or implied
warranties of any kind. In other words, don't blame me if anything goes wrong
with the program or you just generally unhappy about it. If you want more
legalese, find some shareware license agreements on the Web and
enjoy the reading ;-]
Have fun!
