In order to make these images more meaningful, I have
attempted to include a bit of documentation on the images.
First, included in this package is a file called DESCRIPT.ION.
If you use 4DOS, this will print to your computer screen a brief
description of each graphic after the file name. If you don't
use 4DOS, don't worry; these brief descriptions are listed above
with the file names. I have attempted to provide documentation
on the source of each graphic. The graphics come from:

culturas: Lilyan Benitez and Alicia Garces, _Culturas
Ecuatorianas: ayer y hoy_, 7th ed. (Quito: Ediciones
	  Abya-Yala, 1993).
pueblos: Anonymous, _Pueblos del Ecuador_ (Quito: Ediciones
	  Abya-Yala, 1986).
abya-yala: _Agenda 1994: Pueblos de Abya-Yala_. (Quito: Ediciones
	  Abya-Yala, 1993).
COICA: _Nuestra Amazonia_, magazine of the Coordinatora de las
Organizaciones Indigenas de la Cuenca Amazonica
	  (COICA), Quito, Ecuador. No. 0 (Sept/Oct 1993), No. 1
	  (Jan/Feb 1994).
CONFENIAE: _Voz de la CONFENIAE_, magazine of the Confederacion de
Nacionalidades Indigenas de la Amazonia Ecuatoriana
	  (CONFENIAE), Quito, Ecuador. 1:9 (Sept/Oct 1993), 2:10
	  (Nov/Dec/Jan 1994).
CONAIE: _Nacionalidades Indias_, magazine of the Confederacion
de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador (CONAIE),
	  Quito, Ecuador. 1:5-6 (Dec 1993).

In addition, this package includes a file called
HISTORY.TXT which gives a brief history of and bibliography
on the indigenous cultures of Ecuador. This collection of graphics
is labeled "Volume 1." This does not mean there is a second volume,
but it leaves open that possibility should the opportunity arise.

I began collected and scanning clip-art graphics several
years ago. My motivation for doing this was because I wanted
computer clip-art graphics for a local peace and justice
newsletter that I edited, and I couldn't find a source of
appropriate peace graphics. I originally posted two zipped files
of WPG (WordPerfect's graphic format) graphics to the Simtel20
shareware FTP site (currently available at the oak.oakland.edu
anonymous ftp site and its mirrors in the "msdos/wordperf" directory
as CPG1.ZIP and CPG2.ZIP) and later as a collection of 259 TIFF
images (available in the "deskpub" directory as PAZTIFF1.ZIP
through PAZTIFF5.ZIP). None of names of the graphics in the
Ecuador series repeats those of the PAZTIFF series, so they can
be unzipped into the same directory.
A problem with so many graphics is trying to remember what
they all look like. I suggest that you get a graphic cataloger
to make a printout of all of the graphics. The best that I have
found is the Clip Art Graphics Catalog Builder for WordPerfect.
There are two versions of this program CGCATWP3A.ZIP (for
WordPerfect 5.1/6.0 for DOS) and GCATWN31.ZIP (WordPerfect for
Windows). The first file is in the wordperf directory of
oak.oakland.edu, and the second is in the pc/win3/wpwin directory of
ftp.cica.indiana.edu, or directly from the author, Jerry Stern,
P.O. Box 20234, Baltimore, Maryland 21284-0234; phone/FAX
(410) 661-2224, for $20.
If you want to use the files in a different format (like PCX
or GIF), I suggest Graphic Workshop available as GRFWK70B.ZIP (for
DOS) in the "graphics" directory of oak.oakland.edu, as GWSWN11L.ZIP
(for Windows) in the "deskpub" directory of ftp.cica.indiana.edu, or
for $40.00 from Alchemy Mindworks Inc., P.O. Box 500, Beeton, Ontario
L0G 1A0, Canada. Alchemy also makes a Graphic Catalog program
which does not require WordPerfect (available as GRAFCT30.ZIP,
also in the "graphics" directory of oak.oakland.edu) which also costs
$40.00.
Please note that all of these files are zipped with the new
version of pkzip (PKZ204G.EXE), which can be found in the "zip"
directory of oak.oakland.edu.

These graphics are free. I do not hold a copyright for them
and I do not request or expect payment for their use. If you do
find them useful, though, I suggest that you support the efforts of an
organization which works to defend the rights of indigenous people. One
such organization which works closely with indigenous people in Ecuador
is:

South and Meso American Indian Rights Center (SAIIC)
PO Box 28703
Oakland, CA 94604
Tel: (510) 834-4263
Fax: (510) 834-4264
Email: saiic@igc.apc.org

SAIIC is an indigenous-run organization whose purpose is to promote
peace, social justice and the full participation of Indian people in the
decision-making processes that affect their lives. SAIIC produces a
quarterly journal called _Abya Yala News_ which presents news and
anlysis of Indian movements throughout the Americas from an indigenous
perspective. You can receive the journal with a $25 membership in SAIIC
or with a $15 low-income journal subscription.

I have been quite surprised by the response to the previous
graphics that I have posted. Obviously, I am not the only one
whose needs were not being met by commercial clip-art graphics
packages. If you find the graphics useful, I would be interested
in hearing from you about how you have used them. I'm also open
to any suggestions, ideas, etc. In addition, if you send me your
email address I'll notify you next time I have some graphics
ready for distribution.
