NutriBase SR13 Navigator - Minerals Edition Readme File

The latest release of nutrient data from the Nutrient Data Laboratory is called the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 13 (SR13). This research quality nutrient database was prepared and is maintained by the Nutrient Data Laboratory (NDL), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The problem with this data, which is available without charge from the USDA, is that it is virtually unusable in it's native format. It is formatted for magnetic tape and its full version requires considerable effort to convert into a format suitable for use with a modern relational database program.

The NutriBase SR13 Navigator is a family of six programs that - together - contain the nutrient data from the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 13. This edition provides mineral information (as detailed in the chart below). The software provides a fast and intuitive interface to the data that allows users to easily view, rank, and query the data and conduct food name searches.

This software is distributed as freeware. You may redistribute this software - with permission from CyberSoft, Inc. - via the Internet so long as you don't charge a fee or require a purchase for its download. Contact CyberSoft, Inc. at 480-759-4849 if you wish to distribute NutriBase SR13 Navigator or if you are interested in a co-branded edition.

This application requires Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or NT and 16 Mbytes of RAM.

The following is a summary of the NutriBase SR13 Navigator features and capabilities:

1) NutriBase SR13 Navigator - Minerals Edition provides nutrient data for minerals for 18,589 food items. The original SR13 data contains data for 100 gram portions of 6,210 foods. However, the Nutrient Data Laboratory included the information needed to calculate household measures (1 cup, 1 tsp., 2 oz., etc.) for most of these basic food entries. CyberSoft performed the required calculations (several million calculations were required) and included the nutrient values for the common household measures for an additional 12,379 research quality food entries.

2) NutriBase SR13 Navigator contains six additional fields of data that were calculated by CyberSoft. These are values for % Calories from Fat, % Calories from Carbohydrates, and % Calories from Protein, plus Calories from Fat, Calories from Carbohydrates, and Calories from Protein.

3) The software includes Food Names for each of the entries. CyberSoft extracted short, descriptive food names for each of the 18,589 food items listed. The USDA includes a "USDA Description" (of up to well over 130 characters) for each food item. The use of the shorter food name in this software greatly facilitates the accurate and convenient selection of entries.

4) Food subcategories have been added to the original USDA Food Groups. CyberSoft added these subcategories to make it easier to select the specific food items of interest. (For instance, selecting the food group "Beverages," then selecting the "Alcoholic Beverages" subcategory lets you quickly and conveniently generate and alphabetical view of the alcoholic beverages in the database.)

5) Users can specify which nutrients are displayed to the screen. The amount of data contained in the NutriBase SR13 Navigator can be overwhelming. Although the default setting is to display "all nutrients," users may wish to limit the spreadsheet views to only nutrients in which they have a current interest. Users can create their own custom list of nutrients to display. The software lets you create as many combinations of nutrients to display as you wish and saves them under descriptive names (of up to 255 characters) for instant recall.

6) Perform a Food Name Search. Enter a food name (or part of a food name) and NutriBase SR13 Navigator locates all the food items in the database that contain that string. The search will identify any food name that contains all the words specified in the search in any order. This means that if you're searching for "Onion, Ring, Frozen," you could locate "Frozen Onion Rings" if it exists.

7) View the data in a spreadsheet format (in a tabular format of columns and rows). Click a box in any nutrient's column header to rank (sort) all the food items in the display from high-to-low based on their values for the nutrient in that column. Click it again to reverse the sort (rank from low-to-high). This gives users a quick and powerful way to compare the foods as they are viewing them.

8) Double-click any food item in the spreadsheet view to generate a Single Food Summary. This summary shows all the nutrient information available for the selected food item in a single, scrolling screen.

9) Rank (sort) the data from high-to-low or low-to-high based on the value for any nutrient. When the spreadsheet data presentation is presented, the column you chose to rank will be shown first (after food name, comment, and serving size).

10) Conduct a Query (Boolean AND search) to locate all the foods in the selected categories that meet all the criteria you specify. For instance, locate all the foods with a maximum of 30% of their calories from Fat, sorted from lowest value to highest. Or locate all the foods that meet the previous condition AND contain at least 5 grams of Protein AND no more than 200 mg of cholesterol AND at least 10 mcg of Folate. You may specify as many or as few query parameters as you wish.

11) Resize column widths while viewing data by dragging the right edge of the column headers left or right. NutriBase SR13 Navigator will remember these new column widths for you. Users can also change row heights by simply dragging the row's edge up or down.

12) Resequence columns of nutrient information by simply dragging and dropping their column headers to their new locations.

13) Generate a Split-Screen View to look at two different parts of the database simultaneously. The Split-Screen View creates two side-by-side views of the same data. Each side of the Splitter Bar has its own horizontal scroll bar, making it convenient to study data from two widely separated areas of the data. You can drag the splitter bar left or right. This feature works much like the split-screen view made popular in Excel. Its value become apparent as you add editions and you are working with nearly 19,000 foods in over 90 columns of nutrient data.

14) Zoom in or out of the data. Click on the top of the Zoom Control to make the data larger and larger for better viewing, or click the bottom of the Zoom Control to make the fonts smaller and smaller so you can view more data on the screen at once. This allows you to optimize the amount of data on your screen without changing screen resolutions.

15) Jump to any food name instantly. Click the Jump Button. NutriBase displays an alphabetical listing of the unique food names displayed. Select one of the unique food names from the list. Click OK to "jump" to the first occurrence of this food name in the data display.

16) The NutriBase SR13 Navigator editions work standalone or in concert with each other. Each of the six editions in the NutriBase SR13 Navigator series can be installed and operated separately. However, if you require additional data, you can install the editions that contain that data. The software simply expands to include the data from all the installed editions. This allows you to access all nutrient data from a single program rather than from six individual programs.

17) Quote of the Day feature presents a dieting tip, nutrition tip, or a motivational diet-related quotation each time the program loads. Over 1,000 tips are featured.

18) Information section provides a glossary for over 1,000 cooking terms and foods, toll-free numbers for food makers, food substitution charts, "ideal" weight and fat charts, etc.
