INSTALLATION:

				WARNING!!! :
If you have a previous version of NYC on your system, DO NOT select
its folder as the installation path; use a new folder.
Otherwise, you may OVERWRITE a personalized recipe database and
other important	user files with the sample ones that come with the NYC archive!

Step 1. Install NYC:

Make sure ALL other applications are closed.

Double-click setup.exe in the list of files that were unzipped.

This will run the Setup program that will install Now You're Cooking!
on your hard drive under c:\Program Files\Nyc505 unless you select another
location during the install. For convenience during later backups, all user
modifiable files are installed into a \user subfolder. It is highly
recommended that you use these default install paths.

				WARNING:
DO NOT select a previous NYC folder as your install path! If you
want to do this, rename	the old folder first. Example: You want to
install NYC 5.05 into a folder that is named \NYC505 and you already have
a folder named \NYC505. To avoid installing over the old one, first
rename the existing folder (use File... Rename... in the File Manager)
to \NYC505ol and then install NYC into \NYC505.

Step 2.	Before you run NYC (---IMPORTANT---):

Make sure your PC's date and time are set correctly using Control Panel.

If you are upgrading from The Grocery Consumer (NYC's predecessor),
	follow these instructions:

		Upgrading from GC v2.xx:
                ------------------------
You must run GC2XTO3X.EXE to convert recipe file, category index,
and menu file to GC 3.xx format. This will create these files in
v3.xx format in your previous (v2.xx) folder. You will then need
to use File... Upgrade... procedure when you first run NYC
		as follows.

		Upgrading from GC v3.xx:
		------------------------
		Go to Step 3

Make sure PKZIP25.EXE or WINZIP32.EXE or higher exist on your system and that
you know their location. Also, familiarize yourself with the location of your
	web browser.

Step 3.	When you first run NYC (use Start... Programs... Now You're Cooking!):

If you are a new registered user of NYC v5.x:
	---------------------------------------------------------------------
Use Help... Register... to enter your password and registration code
	purchased from Food-for-Thought software.

If you are a registered user of a previous NYC 4.x or GC 3.x version:
	---------------------------------------------------------------------
Use NYC's File...Upgrade... to upgrade user files from your
previous NYC folder. You MUST email your name and registration number
to sales@ffts.com to get an upgraded registration code (FREE).

If you are upgrading from GC and the version you used previously
was GC 3.06 or earlier, make sure you check the box to upgrade
your coupon list when you do File... Upgrade... (next step). There
was a format change in the coupon list for GC 3.07 and higher.

If you are NOT registered and were using a previous NYC version:
	----------------------------------------------------------------
Register the new version (see REGISTRATION INFORMATION later in this
file), enter the registration code using Help... Register... Reg. Info
button. Then run File... Upgrade... to upgrade user files from your
old NYC folder to the new one.

NOTE: If you wish to continue adding to your recipe database as you
upgrade but you aren't a registered user, you may contact Gary Hauser
via internet email at support@ffts.com . I will tell you how to do this
if your need is legitimate and you intend to register in the near future.

Step 4. Locate external programs

Use Tools... Options... to tell NYC where certain external programs are located.

You are DONE! Begin using Now You're Cooking! to manage your grocery activities.

				   IMPORTANT:
WARNING: Do not attempt to use a registered key or code that does not belong
to you, or data loss could result. Do not attempt to edit or alter the
nyc.key file or any other registration information in in any way, or
          data loss could result.

How to create a desktop shortcut for NYC:
You may wish to create a shortcut for NYC onto your desktop. To do this, use Windows
Explorer to find the Nyc.exe file, right click it, select Create Shortcut. You
will then see a shortcut in your NYC folder. Drag it onto the desktop and dbl-click
it to run NYC from the desktop.

SHAREWARE CONCEPT:

This software is SHAREWARE. SHAREWARE is licensed software that you can try
for free before you buy. If you like NYC and wish to continue using it, you
register it with the author.

This SHAREWARE program is distributed with the concept that if you find it
useful and continue to use it beyond a 60-day free trial period, you must
send in the registration fee. See the file REGISTER.TXT for the order form
and pricing information, or complete and print the form using Help... Register
from NYC's main menu. You can also see the ordering information on the NYC
website at www.ffts.com for details how to use our secure online
credit card ordering link (www.ffts.com/register.htm).

To help you evaluate the program, the shareware version of NYC is fully
functional. However, NYC will inform you after a 30-day trial period that
you have not registered. If you have not registered after 60-days, NYC will
disallow further use, and you must register at that time to continue using
the software. When this occurs, you will not lose any of your cookbooks that
you have worked hard on, but you will not be able to access them until you
register. The 60-day trial period is sufficient to allow you to explore the
full power of NYC for recipe management, including downloading of thousands
of recipes from internet sources.

Distribution and Use of the NYC Shareware Archive

You are granted permission to distribute the NYCxxx.ZIP or SNYCxxx.EXE
downloadable archives freely, provided all the original files are
kept together unaltered in any way. You may not disassemble, decompile,
reverse engineer, or alter any of the files in the package for any reason.
This includes, but is not limited to, modifying any icons, menus, or displays
associated with the software.

This software is provided as SHAREWARE and cannot be sold. This restriction
does not apply to connect time charges, or flat rate connection/download fees
for electronic bulletin board services. This software cannot be bundled
with any commercial package or accompanying books or magazines without
express written permission from the author.

Distribution and Use of the NYC Registered Version

You are granted permission to use one registered copy of NYC. You may not
disassemble, decompile, reverse engineer, or alter any of the files in the
package for any reason. This includes, but is not limited to, modifying any
icons, menus, or displays associated with the software.

You may install and use one copy of NYC onto your computer. You may store
or install a copy onto a second computer, provided there is no simultaneous
use of the two copies. You may use NYC on a network, provided that each
person accessing it through the network has a copy licensed to that person.
A license for NYC may not be shared or used concurrently on different computers.

Distribution of any registration code or key is strictly prohibited.

OVERVIEW OF Now You're Cooking!

Now Youre Cooking!, or simply NYC, is a full-featured recipe database, meal planner,
shopping list maker, and grocery cost manager.

With NYC, you can organize your recipes into cookbooks and maintain them with ease. Add or
modify recipes at will. Assign recipes to user-defined categories within each cookbook, or let
NYC auto-assign categories for you. You can even train NYC to categorize recipes as you do.
Create your own default categories to automatically apply to any new cookbook. Quickly find
recipes using multi-criteria searches across cookbooks. No more fumbling through boxes of
paper or cards to find a favorite recipe. Simply select a recipe and print it.

Rapidly expand your cookbooks by importing Meal-MasterTM, MastercookTM, or generic text
recipes. Import recipes from other NYC cookbooks. Export recipes to Meal-MasterTM or generic
text files or to other NYC cookbooks. For backup or exchange, NYC can easily create a ZIP file
that includes a cookbook, its images, and its indexes.

Data entry uses quickfill entry-guessing and droplists to minimize keystrokes. You seldom need
more than a keystroke or so before NYC adds the rest of the entry using droplists that are
automatically updated as you save recipes. Cut and paste using standard WindowsTM techniques.
Gridded data tables (e.g., shopping list, price list, units conversion list) can be edited
with a click of the mouse to the cell containing the entry you want to change; then type a
replacement for the cell contents or backspace to correct a typo. A lot of editing power
is at your fingertips.

Create a meal plan for any time period using recipes from multiple cookbooks or by adding
individual items from droplists. NYC makes a shopping list for each meal plan you create. Add
miscellaneous items (e.g., cat food, deodorant, toothbrush) to the shopping list, or remove items
that you have on hand. Print the list to take to the store. No forgotten recipe items or wasted
time. Maintain multiple menus and shopping lists as necessary to meet your specific needs.

Analyze nutrition for recipes and meal plans. NYC uses a USDA nutrition database with over
5900 food items to provide nutrition analyses for over 40 constituents, including protein, fat(s),
carbohydrates, calories, vitamins, and minerals. NYC ensures accurate nutrition analyses by
allowing you to link ingredients directly to specific USDA database items. You can also add
items in a supplemental user-defined nutrition database.

NYC is the most intuitive interface ever created to manage all these activities, but it is more than
cooking, meal planning, shopping list, and nutrition software. NYC also gives you the consumer
power to compare your shopping list cost across several stores. NYC can organize your
shopping list by store aisle to save time at the store. Manage your coupons with NYC and it will
flag those that apply to items in your shopping list.

NYC uses a price list that you build, along with extensive unit conversions, to combine items
expressed in different units. With this feature NYC can cost out items in your shopping list even
if you do not have a price for an ingredients unit of measure. For each item added to a recipe or
shopping list, a template entry is added to your price list; you need only key in prices. As your
price and unit conversion lists expand, NYC uses more of the shopping list to establish a cost.

When comparing NYC features and price with other recipe/cooking/grocery management
software, we believe NYC represents the best value (i.e., features for the price) available today -
including commercial software and shareware. We retain NYCs shareware status so you can
always try before you buy. Intuitive functionality and clarity are emphasized throughout the
NYC interface. NYC continues to evolve based on thoughtful feedback from avid users in all
walks of life, including households, caterers, bed-and-breakfasts, personal chefs, churches,
schools, day care, dormitories, fraternities, sororities, and restaurants. The latest version can be
downloaded from the NYC support website (www.ffts.com).

In summary, NYC makes a job we all must do very fast, efficient, and even fun. NYC cuts hours
off the time it takes to locate and organize your favorite recipes, plan healthy menus, create your
shopping lists, and do your shopping.
