   INSTALLATION

Detailed information on using Oak Hill Vi is contained in the
manual file VIMANUAL.TXT. This file contains only basic
information on installation & use, plus late-breaking information
on Oak Hill Vi that may not appear in the manual.

Please be sure to check http://home.att.net/~leeperd/ for the very
latest information on Oak Hill Vi, including downloads of the most
   current version.

This information applies to shareware versions VIDOH70A.ZIP and
VIWOH70A.ZIP. Except for their names, these two ZIP archive files
are identical. In future versions, they may differ.

To install Oak Hill Vi, start by unZIPing the files in a temporary
directory of your choice. Presumably you've already done this, or
you wouldn't be reading this file!

The simplest installation is to copy all of the files into a new
directory with a name of your choice, and then add that directory
name to your system PATH variable. Alternatively, you can place
the files in your BIN or WINDOWS directory, which should already
   be in your PATH variable.

The executables are VI16.EXE and VI32.EXE. VI16 is a standard
   16-bit DOS executable. VI32 is a true 32-bit Windows 95/NT console
program. To use VI32, you *must* have the file cw3230.dll in the
same directory as VI32.EXE or in any directory in your current
system PATH variable. You may rename VI16 or VI32 to any
convenient name and create an icon to launch it from your desktop
or program group of your choice. Two sample icons are included
   in the download.

On startup, the program will look for two other files, EXRC and
VIREGKEY.DAT. EXRC is a configuration setup file. If you've
purchased an unlocking key and run VIREGIST.EXE, VIREGKEY.DAT will
contain your name, program serial number, and an unlocking key.
The program will look for both files first in the directory where
the executable starts and second in the directories listed in your
PATH variable. If EXRC is missing, a default configuration will be
used. If VIREGKEY.DAT is missing or the key is invalid, the
program will execute in shareware mode. Use the ":set" command
with no arguments to see the locations (if any) where your program
   found these two files.

To use your software in DOS to edit file "FOO", simply enter
"VI16 FOO". In Windows, you may launch a DOS window and enter
"VI32 FOO", or you may use the MyComputer|View|Options|FileTypes
capability to associate TEXT, C, or other ASCII files with VI32.
Then you need only click on a file name in Explorer to start VI.

   BUGS

At this time (January 1, 1998) there is one known bug in VI32.EXE,
the 32-bit windows version of Oak Hill Vi. The ":set cursor"
command will only work properly with the (default) underline
cursor. The cause appears to be a faulty Borland library file that
we are working with Borland to correct. This bug does not affect
   VI16.EXE.

In VI32, some users have had problems getting the "bell" to sound
on user input error. Please be sure that your Windows system is
configured to have the "default sound" turned on. Otherwise there
   will be no bell!

   REVISIONS AND UPGRADES

Please remember that the latest versions of the software can always
be found at the Oak Hill Web site, http://home.att.net/~leeperd/.
If you have paid for your license, your VIREGKEY.DAT file will work
on any upgrade -- you do not need to request a new license
   unlocking key.

If you have questions, comments, or wish to report a bug, please
   contact us at oakhill@iname.com.

   HOW TO LICENSE/REGISTER YOUR SOFTWARE

See instructions above for how to purchase a lifetime license to
Oak Hill Vi. When you receive your unlocking key from Oak Hill
Software via email or other means, simply run the program
REGISTER.EXE that came with your download. It will create the file
VIREGKEY.DAT. Make sure this file is in the same directory as your
VI16.EXE or VI32.EXE program, or put it in any directory in your
PATH system variable. (We recommend your WINDOWS directory.)
Thereafter, your software will run with no shareware notices or
   pauses.
