PERSONAL INSIGHT 3.0 - INTRODUCTION AND RULES

INTRODUCTION

This game had its roots with a group of people eating dinner in 1982. Trying to make it more entertaining than the general small talk, I asked the simple question to everyone at the table, "What was your most embarrassing moment?" The ground rule was that everyone had to answer in some way. After two hours and lots of laughs I felt as if there might be the basis of some kind of game. Over the years I have developed 893 questions that hopefully will generate the same kind of fun and spontaneity that we had that first evening.

It has been "tested" in many circumstances: large groups of semi-strangers, small groups of friends, one on one situations, young people, older more mature types, and all the combinations in between. All have experienced the same kind of fun, and in many cases, insights into people they thought they knew.

I hope you have the same kind of fun that we had that first night, and all the other times we have tried this particular game.

RULES

There are no real rules, only some guidelines and suggestions. "Well who wins?", you may ask. I originally had a great set of ways to win, but as I tried them out most people did not like them and felt they got in the way. If you want to keep score go ahead, but I think you will find it distracts from the game.

Suggested way of playing is as follows:

Get a group together and arrange them in a circle, or as close as you can get to that. You can play the game with as few as 2 people and as many as 25, but it seems to work best with 4 to 12 people. Once the group is formed then someone has to go first. Whatever method you want to use is fine - just find someone!

That person can randomly pick a question or read through the questions to find one they want to ask. Give them a couple of minutes. Once a question is picked this person reads the question aloud and everyone takes a turn to answer. The first person to answer should be the person directly clockwise from the person who asked the first question. The person who picked the question is the last to answer. After the first person answers, pass the list to the next person clockwise so they can be finding the next question to ask as you go around the circle.

You may want to pick a moderator to keep things rolling, but in most cases, the group generally becomes self governing. You will notice that the conversation will take various tangents, but generally it will come back to what you were doing. These excursions are sometimes off the beaten path, but almost all are just as interesting.

With the playing of the game there is a built in concern that people will not answer the questions, and it will turn dull. I have never found this to be the case. People want to talk and express their opinions or tell some unusual experience in their lives. I have never done this when I did not find out something interesting about someone whom I thought I knew well.

When do you end? Just about when you feel like it. There is no set time, you can generally tell when the group is ready to end. Don't force a time frame in either direction, just let it flow.

Another variation is similar to "truth or dare." The first person to ask the question gets to pick someone to answer. The list is then passed clockwise and the next person gets to choose. This is for the more adventurous as it can get a little more exciting.

There are 3 versions of the questions included in this game:

RANDOM.HTM Questions are in random order

DIFFICLT.HTM Questions are sorted by difficulty (easiest to most difficult)

FAVORITE.HTM My favorite questions

Your comments and suggestions are more than welcome. If you come up with new questions, please let me know. I am always looking for new ones to include in later versions of the game.

I would also be interested if you come up with a great answer for one of the questions. Eventually, if we get enough response I would like to publish the best or great answers to some of these questions. If yours is chosen you will get credit. Here's your chance to get famous!
