    Version 3.52

    OVERVIEW OF KrisCards
    ---------------------
KrisCards is an electronic Christmas card program that's easy,
fast and fun. Simply select a card from the card set and add
your special message in a choice of colors. For extra appeal,
add a song from our Music Menu and select the "Fader" option.
Your finished card is saved as a compact self displaying file,
    which we call a "KrisCard"(TM).

KrisCards are the ideal greetings for the Holidays. There is
no limit to the number of personalized cards that you can send
and they can be delivered quickly and inexpensively. Because
of their compact size, KrisCards are ideal for attaching to
e-mail. However, there's much more to life than just e-mail.

KrisCards makes it easy to say you care. KrisCards supports
international greetings with an extended character set used
by many languages. Printed cards are easy to make too. Our
special Save routines automatically creates the correct layout
for you. Also, KrisCard images can be saved as PCX files, or
to the Windows Clipboard, for use by other programs.

KrisCards is compatible with the greatest number of computers
world wide. KrisCards can be run from Windows, OS/2, GeoWorks,
Linux, and any DOS compatible system; including 16 and 32 bit.
A VGA or EGA color display is required.

For Windows users, we have supplied a simplified setup program
for you. Please read WINSTALL.TXT for additional information.
We have also included some small bitmaps that may be converted
to icons for OS/2 and others.

    ABOUT THIS TEXT
    ---------------
Within this document, we use square brackets to indicate an active
key, such as [F1] for Function Key One. Combination keys, such as
[Alt X], require you to hold down the first key while pressing the
second one. Upper case titles are used for emphasis or to denote
important information. Technical notes and legal notices are
located at the end of this document.

We recommend that you read this document if you have any questions
on how the program works. Some of the special features may not be
apparent to new users. For advance users, or people who just don't
like reading manuals, we have included a one page reference called
KWIKHELP.TXT that you may want to print.

                                                                - Page 2 -

    STARTING KrisCards
    ------------------
Starting KrisCards is easy. Just type the name and press [Enter]
or use your Browse function to locate the file and click on it.
If you have run our Windows setup program, a clickable icon is
available to you. Under Win95/98, the icon is normally located
in the Start menu. Click on Start/Programs/KrisCards.

Upon startup, the Main Menu is displayed. This is the first
of six menus. There are four additional file menus and one
for music. All menus have help screens which can be activated
by pressing the [F1] key. Help screens provide general guidance
and a list of the active keys for each function. Active keys
are listed in white letters, and darkened for any function that
may not be available, such as the Windows Clipboard.

Menu functions can be selected by pressing the corresponding key
or clicking on the appropriate button. [Escape] returns you to
the previous menu. Use [Alt X] to exit the program at any time.
Our mouse routines use a single press of the left button.

    MAIN MENU
    ---------
Six functions are available through this menu by pressing the
associated key or clicking on the corresponding button. The first
five functions will invoke one of the sub-menus for file or music
selection. The functions and keys are ....

                [A] Audition Music.

                [B] Browse Blank Cards.

                [C] Create a New Card.

                [D] Display Finished Cards.

                [E] Edit a Finished Card.

               [End] END the program.

NOTE: You may also exit the program with [Alt X] or by clicking on
the "X" icon located in the top left corner of the Main menu.

    MUSIC MENU
    ----------
Song titles are preceeded by an upper case letter. Use arrow
or letter keys to select a song title. Press [Enter] to play
the song. Clicking on a title selects and plays the song with
one action. Title selection is locked while the music is playing.

Press any key or left click the mouse to stop the music. The
stop action is absorbed to prevent accidental restarting of the
same song. Press [Escape] to return to the previous screen.

                                                                - Page 3 -

    FILE MENUS
    ----------
The top bar of this menu contains blocks indicating the current
function and Fade Status. You may change the Fade Status by
clicking on the Fade block or by pressing [Alt F]. The double
box in the upper left corner of the screen duplicates [Escape].

"Hot keys" allow you to change functions without returning to
the Main Menu screen. Use the [Alt] key with [A],[B],[C],[D],
or [E] to change functions. [Alt X] always quits the program.

The center portion of the screen lists the available files. A
warning message is displayed if no matching files are found in
the current directory. When launching from Windows, this will
be the Work Directory specified in PROPERTIES or alternately
as the Start Up Directory used in the Windows 3.1 PIF file.

Available files are listed alphabetically in five columns on a
page that holds up to 85 names. A maximum of 170 names can be
displayed on two pages. Use [Page Up] and [Page Down] to change
pages or click on the arrow icons in the right hand corners.

The currently selected file name is displayed in white letters.
You may use the arrow keys to select a name or the letter keys to
find the first matching name. If no match exists, the file name
    highlight does not move.

Arrow key movements are limited to the selected page. The name
highlight will "wrap around" to the next name if you reach the
end of a line or page. [Home] and [End] may be used to jump to
the first and last name of all names found.

Keyboard users should press [Enter] to confirm the selection and
display the file. When using a mouse, clicking on a name selects
and confirms in one action. Once a file is confirmed, KrisCards
will check to see that is valid. Valid files are displayed and the
corresponding function is invoked. If the file is invalid, an error
message is displayed on the bottom bar until you click anywhere or
    press a key.

    BROWSE/DISPLAY MODES
    --------------------
The image is displayed full screen without prompts, and will fade
up from black if Fade Status is ON. BROWSE is for viewing blank
cards. In DISPLAY mode, the finished card is displayed with your
message as you typed it and any included music is played. Finished
cards may be saved with Fade Status off or on. Kriscards detects
the fade status of each card and sets the program fade accordingly.
Click or press any normal key to return to the Files Menu.

Three special features are available in the viewing modes; file
deletion, palette conversion and image conversion. These features
can be activated by pressing the appropriate keys. You may review
a list of these keys by pressing [F1] from the BROWSE and DISPLAY
menus. A detailed explanation of these features is provided in a
later section of this document entitled "SPECIAL FEATURES".

                                                                - Page 4 -

    EDIT/CREATE MODES
    ----------------
CREATE allows you to add text and music to a blank card. EDIT
allows you to change a finished card. CREATE will automatically
invoke EDIT so that you can make any needed corrections before
    saving your finished card.

After the image is displayed, a status bar appears at the top of
the screen. A mouse may be used for changing items on the status
bar. Arrow keys are used to select text column (cursor position)
    and text color.

CURSOR POSTION Use the Left arrow or Backspace key to erase
                        the previous character.

The Right arrow key moves cursor one space and
prints the appropriate character and color. If
you have not entered any text, this will simply
be a series of blanks. In EDIT, the original
character and color will be revealed, saving
you from retyping a line during corrections.

SELECTING COLORS The current text color is displayed as a block
on the right side of the status bar. Use the
Up and Down arrow keys to select from the palette
of available text colors. The background color
is never displayed since it would make the text
                        invisible.

The current line number and total number of available lines are
displayed in the center of the status bar. Enter your text after
selecting the color of your choice. KrisCards supports the ASCII
standard characters set and the extended character set used by
HTML 1.0 (Latin1). Use the Numeric key pad for typing extended
characters by holding down [ALT] and entering the three digit
code. Example: Type [ALT 193] for an acute accented "A".

A Gray Bar indicates the number of characters remaining on the
selected line. Text is limited to this area. The left side of the
bar acts as your cursor. If you continue to type beyond this space,
the cursor will not move and the last character is overwritten.
Once you have completed a line of text, press [Enter] to save it.

Your text is then displayed as it will be on the finished card.
In CREATE, the Gray Bar moves to the next blank line where you can
continue to create your message until all available lines have
been displayed. Press [Enter] to skip to the next line and leave
    the current one blank.

You will now be prompted with a "Center? Y/N" message. Press
[Y] to automatically center the text on the line. Any other key
skips centering. You may undo the centering during corrections.

                                                                - Page 5 -

Once all available lines have been displayed, you enter the EDIT
mode. You can skip directly to EDIT from any line by pressing
[Page Down] or by clicking on the center of the status bar. Line
centering is omitted for any blank lines.

    EDIT MODE
    ---------
You are prompted to see if you want to correct any line of text.
Press the corresponding number key to correct a line.

Use the right arrow key to reveal each letter of a left justified
line of text, even if you selected Center before. This allows
you to change your mind about centering the text.

If you select a valid line number, the Gray Bar will highlight the
appropriate line for corrections or new text. Press [Enter] to
save the new line and indicate if you want to center. The program
returns to the EDIT prompt where you may correct other lines.

You may change the Fade Status of a finished card during EDIT.

When you are done with corrections, you will be asked if you want
to add or change music selections. Press [Y] to confirm or any
other key to save the file.

    Adding and Changing Music
    --------------------------
Pressing [Y] takes you to a menu of song titles with a letter
beside each name. Enter the appropriate letter to select a
song for your card or use the arrow keys and [Enter]. Click
on the lower bar or press the Space Bar for NO music. This
removes any music from a finished card. Press [Escape] to
exit the menu without changing the music in a finished card.
Music is not played from this menu. After you have made your
selection, you are ready to save your card.

    SAVE MODE
    --------
The Fade Status is locked during this mode.

You will be prompted to enter a file name of up to 8 characters.
The .COM extension is automatically added. All cards are saved
to the current directory and drive. Valid characters for a name
are A-Z, 0-9, a dash, or an underscore. Others are ignored, and
lower case letters are capitalized. The backspace key may be used
for corrections. Long filenames are not yet supported.

Press [Enter] to save the file with the name that you typed.
If no name is entered, you are asked if you want to continue
with this card. Press [Y] to return to EDIT.

If the specified file already exists, you will be prompted for
permission to overwrite the old file. Press [Y] to overwrite.

                                                                - Page 6 -

If you did not confirm an overwrite, or if the specified file is
write protected, you will be prompted for a new name. If there
is not enough disk space to save the file, you will be returned
to the Files Menu and an error message will be displayed.

After the file has been saved, you will be asked if you wish to
continue with the same image. This is useful for making multiple
copies of a card where only a few text lines are different.

Press [Y] to return to EDIT. Any other key returns you to the
Files Menu where you may view the finished card, create a PCX
    file, or select another function.

    SPECIAL FEATURES
    ----------------
Three special features are available in the viewing modes; file
deletion, palette conversion and image conversion. These features
are not apparent since all screen prompts are hidden during normal
viewing. This is necessary so that a clean image can be captured
    to the Windows Clipboard.

These features can be activated by pressing the appropriate keys
as described below. You may review these keys by pressing [F1]
from the BROWSE and DISPLAY menus.

    [Delete] - Erase Files
    --------------------
You may erase the file containing the displayed image by pressing
[Delete]. You will be prompted for confirmation before deletion.
You are returned to the Files Menu after the prompt. If you
confirmed the deletion, a message is display showing the results.
Use this feature to delete finished cards that have been sent.

    [F5] - Dithering
    ----------------
Dithering may be required for images that you want to export to
the Windows Clipboard. The Windows 3.x driver does not support
all of the colors used in KrisCards. Dithering uses alternating
dots of basic colors to simulate a palette of differing hues.
Dithering is not normally required for later versions of Windows.

Press [F5] to dither the image. During this conversion, the
screen will change colors and then be restored. Avoid using
a "windowed display" in Windows as it will increase the time
required. Press [F5] again to remove the dither.

                                                                - Page 7 -

    [Alt Print Screen]
    ------------------
If you are running KrisCards under Windows, you can capture the
image to the Clipboard by holding down the [Alt] key and pressing
the [Print Screen] key (similar keys are used in OS/2.) You can
then swap to an active Windows application by pressing [Alt Tab]
and PASTE the Clipboard image into the application. Windows 3.1
must be in the 386 Enhanced mode for this feature to work and may
not display the colors correctly. For additional information,
read the section entitled "TIPS FOR WINDOWS".

    PCX Save
    --------
PCX files allow you to send your greetings to friends who do not
have a compatible display or computer. PCX files can be viewed
by many programs and imported into most paint, FAX and desk top
publishing programs for printing. Read the section entitled
"PRINTING YOUR CARDS" for additional information.

KrisCards can save images in 3 different layouts, depending
on your need. You will be prompted to enter a DOS file name
of up to eight characters. Press [Enter] to confirm the name.
The layout type is displayed on the right side of the prompt.
To abort the process, press [Enter] only with no name.

The PCX extension is added to the name and the file is saved.
If a file with the same name exists, you will be prompted for
permission to overwrite. Saving always returns you to the
Files Menu where a status message is displayed in the lower
bar. A "failed" message indicates a full disk or an existing
    protected file.

NOTE: You may dither the image to a Windows palette before
saving. All PCX files are saved with a sorted palette.

    [F2] - V-Fold PCX Save
    ----------------------
The image is trimmed to eliminate unused portions of the screen.
This is the traditional top folded layout. The card is 2 times as
long as the image and has a back. This type of card looks best,
but requires an insert or printing on the back side of the paper.

    [F3] - TriFold PCX Save
    -----------------------
The image is trimmed to eliminate unused portions of the screen.
The card is 3 times as long as the image and has a back and message
area. This is the easiest card to make. We have included a file
called TRIFOLD.COM to illustrate how to fold the paper.

    [F4] - PCX Save
    ---------------
The entire screen is saved. Use this layout for importing into
other applications or as a standard viewing file.

                                                                - Page 8 -

    FINISHED CARDS
    --------------
To ensure the smallest file size, KrisCards will select the
appropriate program code based on the music option and adjusts
accordingly. The Fade option does not increase file size.

Finished cards have a very simple behavior when viewed outside of
KrisCards. After the Fade In, the music is played and the image
is displayed until a key is pressed. The image then fades out
and the program ends. Finished cards do not recognize a mouse.

You may stop the music from playing by pressing any key. To
display a musical card without playing the music, you can press
any key immediately after starting the card. Another key press
    is required to Fade Out.

Finished cards contain a mini-help feature. Type "/?" after
the file name to display it. The "help line" is automatically
displayed if an unsupported video card is detected.

    SENDING KrisCards
    -----------------
ONLINE SERVICES allow e-mail with attachments to other members
and often to other services. Normally, you need only to enter
a subject before attaching the file. Some services limit the
document size, but usually our cards will be smaller than that.
America Online and Microsoft Network have no restrictions. When
sending a binary file, it is usually encoded as "text" and the
recipient must convert it back to the original file. Fortunately,
most email services provide these conversions automatically.

NEWSGROUPS are very likely to still be using the older UUENCODE
format. Make sure of the format before posting. A better way
may be to place some cards on your home page and let a browser
    retreive them. (No encoding needed!)

WEB SITES and BULLETIN BOARDS may allow "private uploads" and
have "mail boxes" where only the intended can receive the mail.

NETWORKS usually have a common "work disk" where you can leave
files. Use this option if your e-mail does not allow binary
files to be attached. Then use a standard message to inform
your friend where they may find the file.

FLOPPY DISKS can always be used to send cards to your friends.
KrisCards are compact, so send them several. Make sure that
the disk is a size and format that can be read.

Before FAXING a card, it may be necessary to print it first.
Many FAX machines will only process black and white images.
Some FAX programs import PCX files for direct transmission.

PRINTED CARDS can be sent to ANYONE and you can always include
a floppy disk full of KrisCards Musical Christmas Cards!

                                                                - Page 9 -

    PRINTING YOUR CARDS
    -------------------
KrisCards can save images in the PCX file format and provides
direct access to the Windows Clipboard for printing your cards.
Import the PCX files into a paint program or desktop publisher
for printing. A color printer is recommended.

KrisCards were designed for optimal display on a monitor, which
is very predictable. However, printers vary greatly and do not
use the same resolution as your monitor. Most paint programs
compensate for this and calculate a print image based on 96 dpi.
Many programs allow you to adjust the aspect ratio of the print
image or to scale the vertical size. Use these features if your
cards appears to be "squashed" when printed.

Use the default 96 dpi setting for printing a card about 6 1/2
inches wide (165mm). Set a higher print resolution to make a
smaller printed image. You can make some great gift tags by
printing V-Fold cards at 300 dpi.

V-Fold cards require printing on the back side of the paper. It
may take some time to correctly align the text. An easier way is
to create an insert on a light weight paper, then cut to fit and
glue it inside your card. For the best quality, use WordPad or
another word processor to create the insert.

We recommend that you use a 24 pound or heavier paper for all
cards to obtain a professional look. Use a scalable font, such
as TrueType, for adding text to cards or making inserts. Wait
until AFTER you have folded the card to trim excess paper from
the sides of the card. Be sure to turn off all margins before
    printing your card.

If your printer requires a margin, scale a TriFold to about 90%
to make it all fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. For a bigger
card, use a longer paper. TriFold cards look best when printed
on legal size (8 1/2 by 14 inch) paper.

Windows paint programs are a good choices for adding text to
TriFold cards. We recommend a font size of 30 or more. Click
on "View" and then click on "Zoom Out" to view the entire card.
Before printing, click on "Printer Setup" and choose "Portrait"
orientation. Printed cards may sometimes exhibit a horizontal
banding. Click on "Options" and choose "Fine Dithering" to
    minimize this error.

A variation of TriFold card is the Z-Fold, which is well suited
for newsletters. Use a word processor and center the graphic at
the top of the page. Add text below the graphic to fill the page.
Z-Fold cards allow you to use the entire page and "unfolds" the
story as it is expanded from its "Z" shape.

    TIPS FOR WINDOWS
    ------------------

Write for Windows - WordPad for Windows
    ----------------------------------------
Windows word processors will allow you to create newsletters or
custom cards. Save a KrisCard to the Clipboard and then start
the word processor. Open a document and position the cursor where
you want the top left corner of the graphic to start. Click on
"Edit" and select "Paste". The image is placed in your document.

Write allows you to stretch an image. Click on the image and it
will be color reversed. Click on "Edit" again and select "Size
Picture". Move the cursor to the bottom of the picture. Hold
down the left button and move the mouse to size the picture.
Click outside the image to restore the correct colors. You may
use the Justify commands to center the image. Unfortunately,
Write will not let you place text next to your image. Use
Paintbrush to add text to the side of the image before placing
    it on the Clipboard.

WordPad is the Win9x replacement for Write. It is a more powerful
tool than Write for creating newsletters with it colorful text and
    Paint-like features.

    Paintbrush for Windows
    ----------------------
You can create "wallpaper" and clip art from our images with this
program. Smaller images may be suitable for "tiled wallpaper".
Use the PICK tool to enclose the desired size and save this area
as a 16 color BMP file. Use the Control Panel Desktop applet to
    activate the image as wallpaper.

    Paint for Windows 95
    --------------------
This Win95 replacement will still import PCX files but only exports
BMP files. Paint operates very similar to the older PaintBrush but
allows you to bypass Desktop and save your image directly as the
current wallpaper theme. You may want to use another program to
convert the bitmap images to a smaller format. Several free file
viewers are available that convert to many formats.

Please remember that all KrisCard images retain their copyright
status. They may not be used for any commercial intent without
    prior permission from the author.

    LICENSING AGREEMENT
    -------------------
KrisCards is a copyrighted work and is protected under the law by
the U.S. Copyright Act and international treaties. The program(s),
image files and child programs may not be changed or modified in
any way except as detailed in this document.

The registered program is licensed for SINGLE USE ONLY, meaning
that each registered copy of KrisCards may be used by only one
person at any given time. You are free to make backup copies,
providing that you retain the original and all backup copies.

Our license is for personal and non-profit use by an individual
or business. Commercial use requires written permission from
the author. If this program is to be used by a business, it
must be registered to a specific employee.

Business persons and Bulletin Board operators may send KrisCards
to their clients as long as the two following conditions are met.
    1. The software must be registered, and
    2. The cards must remain free of overt commercial intent.

As an example, "Merry Christmas from your friends at Acme Anvils"
is acceptable, but "Bonsaii trees - only $19.95" is not. The
first is a personal greeting, while the latter constitutes an
offer. KrisCards and/or its images may not be used in any form
of advertising without prior written consent.

Non-profit organizations, such as schools, clubs and churches,
which operate for the good of the community, are granted full
use of the images from their copy of the registered software
in newsletters, bulletins and other such forms of communications.

    TECHNICAL NOTES
    ---------------
    1. On startup, KrisCards checks your system for compatibility.
You may need to run KrisCards in a "DOS Compatibility Box"
on some systems or from the command line. Should an error
occur, KrisCards will display a message for five seconds
that describes the problem and the program ends. Please
contact us if an error occurs.

    2. The version number and serial number can be checked without
launching the program by typing "Kriscard /?". You may need
this information for future upgrades or technical support.

    3. KrisCards should be run in the FULL SCREEN mode of Windows.
Many of the colors used in KrisCards are not recognized by
older versions of Windows. Also, a "windowed" screen may
prevent KrisCards from correctly using your mouse.

    4. KrisCards mouse routines require a DOS mouse driver or a
virtual driver. Windows 3.x does not "virtualize" and a
"real mode" driver must be loaded before KrisCards is run.
Windows 9x does "virtualize", but a real mode driver can be
added to your DOSSTART.BAT for times when you want to run
       KrisCards in the "DOS Mode".

    5. KrisCards image resolution is 640 x 350. When viewed on the
LCD display of some laptop computers, the image may not fill
the screen. Some "low cost" VGA cards may also act this way.
Most monitors correctly display the image full screen.

    6. KrisCards require a color display which is EGA compatible.
All VGA video cards meet this standard. However, KrisCards
will not work with monochrome VGA displays or MCGA cards.

    7. Some older video cards may be too slow to produce a smooth
fade. This results in a "stepped" fade, but does no harm.
Turn off the fade option if these "stepped" fades bother you.

    8. Regretfully, some computers do not contain a true speaker but
use a piezo buzzer instead. This degrades the sound quality
and volume produced. You can press any key to stop the music.

    9. KrisCards is shipped in the compressed ZIP file format. The
files must be "unzipped" before use.
